Proposal Ideas in North Wales: Five Romantic Places to Pop the Question
If you're planning to propose in North Wales, you're spoilt for choice: mountains, lakes, lighthouses and miles of coastline, all within reach of each other. I'm Leon, a celebrant and photographer based in North Wales, and through Where Two Bloom I help people propose with a personalised love letter that I read aloud to your loved one before you ask the question. So I spend a lot of time thinking about where the moment should happen! Here are five romantic places to propose in North Wales, with the practical bits you'll want to know.
1. Llanddwyn Island, Anglesey

If you want a place with love woven into its story, this is it. Ynys Llanddwyn is home to the ruins of a church dedicated to St Dwynwen, the Welsh patron saint of lovers. Her feast day, St Dwynwen's Day, is celebrated on 25 January and is often called the Welsh Valentine's Day, so proposing here (on any day of the year) feels very special.
Getting there: park at the Llanddwyn Beach car park in Newborough Forest, then walk along the beach to the island. Natural Resources Wales charges £5 for up to two hours or £15 for the day, and you pay at the machine by contactless card or through RingGo.
Good to know: Visit Wales explains that it's a peninsula that's only very rarely cut off by the highest tides, but always check the tide times before you go. It's also exposed, so pack a warm layer.
2. The Great Orme, Llandudno

The Great Orme is a dramatic limestone headland at the edge of Llandudno, with views over to Anglesey and Snowdonia. You'll find quiet grassy spots, sea views in almost every direction and some of the best sunsets in North Wales looking out over West Shore.
Getting there: Marine Drive is a five-mile toll road around the base of the headland. It's £5.80 per car, and the toll ticket also covers parking at the summit. Walkers and cyclists use it for free.
Good to know: parts of Marine Drive occasionally close because of rockfalls, so check before you set off and have a second spot in mind.
3. Llyn Padarn, Llanberis

On a still day, Llyn Padarn turns into a mirror for the mountains of Snowdonia. It's home to the famous lonely tree standing in the water, one of the most photographed spots in North Wales. It's also where Penny and James said "I do" with my sister experience, Elope with Leon, so if you'd love a full-circle moment one day, this lake is hard to beat. You can see Penny and James's elopement.
Getting there: the closest parking is Padarn Country Park car park (LL55 4EL), and from there the tree is a short, fairly flat walk. That makes it a lovely choice if you'd like somewhere stunning without a big hike.
Good to know: it's popular with photographers at sunrise and sunset, so a quieter time of day will give you more privacy.
4. South Stack, Anglesey

A white lighthouse on a rocky island, sheer cliffs and nothing but sea to the horizon: South Stack is pure romance. It's renowned for its sunsets throughout the summer, and the clifftops around the lighthouse are part of an RSPB nature reserve.
Getting there: parking is run by the RSPB. It's free for RSPB members, and for everyone else it's £3.50 for up to an hour or £7.50 for the day, paid at the visitor centre.
Good to know: it can be windy up here, so keep a firm hold of that ring box, and stay well back from the cliff edges.
5. Somewhere that's already yours
Sometimes the most romantic place isn't a famous viewpoint at all. It could be the beach where you had your first date, your favourite walk or even your own garden. With a guided proposal, I show up at a location and time of your choice, morning, afternoon or evening. Once you have a place in mind, share the details with me and I'll visit beforehand to make sure I can get high-quality photos from any position.
Tips for proposing outdoors in North Wales
Watch the light. Golden hour is magical. In summer the sun sets at around 9.45pm in Llandudno, and in midwinter at around 4pm, so plan your timing around the season.
Have a plan B. The weather here can change quickly, so it's worth having a sheltered alternative nearby.
Check the tides if you're heading to a beach or a tidal island.
Choose a quiet moment. Weekdays and early mornings are far less busy at the popular spots.
Leave no trace. Take everything home with you, so these places stay just as beautiful for the next couple.
Let your words land beautifully
Wherever you choose, the moment itself is what matters. With a guided proposal, I craft a love letter from your feelings and memories and read it aloud to your loved one before you propose. Then my camera comes up to capture the question, the "yes!" and everything that follows, and you'll be handed Polaroids that develop in your hands, ready to tuck into your love letter as a keepsake. When I photographed Nabeel's proposal to Massuma, their verdict was simple: "The pictures were perfect and captured at the exact right moments."
Have a look at how a guided proposal works, or get in touch and tell me about your love story. When the time comes to tie the knot, you'll also receive 10% off a luxury elopement with Elope with Leon, and you can see how all three experiences connect at Leon Bagnall Experiences.
