What to Say When You Propose: Simple Words That Sound Like You

What to say when you propose is the question that keeps most people awake. You know how you feel. The worry is that the words will come out tangled, too long or not at all.

I'm Leon. I plan and photograph guided proposals in North Wales, and I have learned that the best proposal speeches are short, plain and unmistakably yours.

Keep It Short

You do not need a speech that lasts minutes. In the moment, a few honest sentences land harder than a page of memorised lines. A simple shape works for almost everyone:

  • Their name: said slowly, so they know this is not an ordinary moment.

  • One true memory: the day you knew, or a small thing they do that you love.

  • What you want: the life you see together, in one sentence.

  • The question: asked clearly, then left to breathe.

Use Your Own Words, Not Borrowed Ones

Quotes and song lyrics can feel safe, but your partner wants to hear you. If you would never say "my soulmate" over dinner, do not start now. "I want to grow old with you in this mad little house" means more than any line you could copy from a list.

When Nerves Take Over

Nerves are normal and they are not a sign that anything is wrong. Write your few sentences down, say them out loud a handful of times, then stop rehearsing. If your mind goes blank, the question alone is enough. Nobody has ever been turned down for forgetting their second sentence.

Let the Love Letter Carry the Big Words

This is exactly why I created the guided proposal. Before the day, we shape everything you want to say into a proposal love letter. On the day, I read it aloud to your partner, so the memories and feelings land exactly as you meant them. My camera stays down while the letter is read. Then it is your turn, and all you need to say is the question. You can read how it unfolds in what happens on the day of a guided proposal.

Wherever You Say It

The words matter more than the backdrop. A beach on Anglesey, a lakeshore in Eryri, a quiet path in the Conwy Valley or your own garden all work. You can choose anywhere, and I will meet you there.

Say less, mean all of it, and let the rest follow. The guided proposals page explains how we would shape your words together, and the services page lists everything included.
